Contest(s) on Facebook Pages Could Get You Banned

Yes, you read that correctly. Your Facebook page is at risk, and I am not sure what it is, but lately there has been far too many local business, yes right here in Kennewick and Richland, that have been promoting contests the wrong way.

I am a firm believer in doing almost anything to get more likes, followers and interaction with my fans on Facebook.  But did you know that running a contest by telling your fans to ‘like’ a post  is against Facebook promotional rules?

If caught,

(and lets face it, you will eventually get caught, Okay, well, maybe not, but do you REALLY want to risk it?) …

YOUR Company’s Facebook Page will be removed.

Facebook Pages Terms have specific rules that forbid page owners from doing such.  Have you actually read Facebook’s terms? No worries because I have read it over a dozen times and am going to lay out all the ‘How-To’s’ to make sure that you are in line with Facebook rules and regulations when it comes to running contests.

First off a promotion can mean quite a few of different things. So to quote Facebook:

“These Promotions Guidelines govern your communication about or administration of any sweepstakes, contest, competition or other similar offering (each, a “promotion”) on Facebook.

A “sweepstakes” is a promotion that includes a prize and a winner selected on the basis of
A “contest” or “competition” is a promotion that includes a prize and a winner determined on the basis of skill (i.e., through judging based on specific criteria).

So basically absolutely ANYTIME that you run a campaign, a contest, a competition etc where you are selecting, drawing or awarding a winner, this act falls under the terms of Facebook’s Promotion Guidelines.

Still a little confused? To state it plainly YOU CANNOT have anybody take any sort of action using Facebook features and/or functionality such as:

  • Liking a Page or checking in to your Facebook Page to register or be entered into the competition.
  • Liking a status update, a photograph or video on your Pages timeline.
  • Using the Like button, to cast a vote or be entered into the drawing.
  • Telling your current fans that the first person to ‘like’ this status wins.

And even,

  • Notify winners through Facebook (Facebook messages, chat or posts on their timelines or pages.

So how do you run a contest, a drawing or competition? Very easy! You absolutely MUST us a third party application to conduct your contest or at the very least hold the competition on your companies Website.

That’s right, Facebook is not a hub to draw in more fans, followers or interaction by using contest’s to like your status or picture.  If this is what you are, have or may do, please STOP!  Let’s do this the right way!

So before you go and suggest to your current fans to ‘like’ your status in order to win a prize or a discount or something free, remember DON’T: Use Facebook’s platform!
